About The Derek Project

This resource guide is authored by Interpretation of Literature students at the University of Iowa, with instructor Jennifer Shook. For more information about the guide or the course project, email jennifer-shook at uiowa.edu.

The Derek Project, named in memoriam to a young artist, Derek Wortman, emerged from Dr. Linda Bolton’s “Art, Ethics, and Justice” class in the English Department at the University of Iowa.  One of the core questions in the class is “What can/should art do?”  This project seeks to explore this question through interdisciplinary workshops in community schools by fusing literature, visual art, creative writing, history, dance, music, and theater.

To find out how you can be part of this project, please email Amie-Ohlmann at uiowa.edu or call (319) 621-1802.

The 2012 Derek Project will feature a reading by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natasha Trethewey on April 19. View the program brochure for more information.
